Safe and Comfortable Tooth Extractions
A tooth extraction can seem scary, but it’s important to remember that is a low-risk and almost painless routine procedure.
Depending on your case, we can perform some tooth extractions here in our office, or we may refer out to an oral surgeon.
Reasons For a Tooth Extraction
A tooth extraction procedure is commonly completed to remove wisdom teeth. This specific procedure is usually handled by an oral surgeon. When your wisdom teeth are impacted it can stop your teeth from growing in normally or it can cause damage to the nearby teeth.
A dentist may recommend an extraction to make room for proper tooth alignment. Other times, a tooth needs to be extracted when it’s badly damaged or decayed. In some cases, an extraction, can prevent infection and relieve pain.
The Tooth Extraction Process
This process should take around a few minutes. The procedure is relatively painless and it looks similar to this:
- After taking some X-rays, the dentist or oral surgeon will review them with you and talk through the entire process with you.
- The dentist will use a local numbing agent for the tooth, gum, and bone.
- Throughout the extraction, you should only feel pressure and no pain.
- Normally, the dentist can remove the tooth using applied pressure, rather than surgical invention.
The Recovery Process
The recovery process is pretty straightforward. Your dentist will send you home with clear instructions on how to care for the extraction site during the hours and days following the procedure. Some patients may need to use gauze to control the bleeding.
For those who experience pain after the procedure, the dentist or oral surgeon may prescribe medicine to take for some relief in the following days. The gums should fully heal in a matter of weeks, as long as the site is kept nice and clean. Once healed, you may be interested in replacing the missing tooth with an implant, bridge, or denture.
